So we got a surprise email a few weeks back that our “apples had shipped”…. WHAT! It was nearly mid December, what were we going to do with 39 apples trees?
The story goes like this… it was back in mid-November and we had not yet received our trees so we cancelled…. and not just called once to cancel, mind you, we were incredibly thorough: we called, emailed, called again, emailed again, spoke to 3 different people and contacted the shipping department to ensure our cancellation was received. It was a $500 tree order and we knew that if it was going to be too much longer the ground here in Michigan would be too frozen to plant. BUT alas the second week of DECEMBER we received an email that read, “your order has shipped”!
WHAT? A few days later a notice came in the mailbox that our package had arrived and was ready for pick up at the post office. I immediately called the nursery and offered to return the shipment but was informed that it was their error and they instructed us to “dispose of the trees”. That just seemed silly and so environmentally NOT FRIENDLY—So, IN the Ground THEY GO! Farmer Dave took “Big Red” (our new Dodge truck) and headed to the post office to retrieve our package. WOW! This wasn’t your typical package either–oh no! These were 6ft tall sticks jetting out of a 18″ burlap ball, wrapped with a pound of packaging tape and crazy nails tapped in everywhere.
We unwrapped the bundle and counted our trees—we received all 39 (plus our 13 Huckleberries too)! We had 13 of each apple variety: Gala, Red Delicious & Golden Delicious. So, in the ground they went the next day…. Brrr! Good job Farmer Dave! I didn’t help but cheered on in spirit!
No photos yet, but perhaps we’ll snap a few later this winter…. we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they survive the winter and don’t become rabbit food, stay tuned!
