LIFE ON THE FARM: Lesson #2

KNOW YOUR NUTS – O.k. so we took “Mean Dean” (my dad–grandpa the garden master) out to the farm this weekend and we learned that apparently we don’t have Walnut trees…. we have HICKORY TREES! Ah ha, that explains why they looked so small compared to the Walnuts we found by our house.The good news is all is not lost — the Hickory trees are huge (and we have a bunch of them) which will produce tons of nuts this fall plus there is still hope for Walnuts… we haven’t checked all the trees in the forest and I’ll bet we’ll find a few of those gentle giants yet! So I’m changing my plea, if anyone knows a secret to harvesting HICKORY NUTS we’re all ears.
